Two consecutive trainings on international humanitarian law (IHL) were held this November for at least 45 members of the Philippine National Police who take part in internal security operations.

The trainings, conducted by the PNP Human Rights Affairs Office in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), are part of efforts to integrate the teaching of IHL, also known as the law of armed conflict, in the police force.

The PNP leadership, led by PNP Chief Director General Ricardo C. Marquez, conferred the Performance Governance System Compliant Status to the PNP Human Rights Affairs Office during the Monday Flag Raising Ceremony held on October 5, 2015, at the National Headquarters, Camp Crame, Quezon City.

"This training is not just passing on to you new facts or profound legal terms and phrases. This is essentially about going back to our original and most important mission as police officers—that is, to be servants and protectors of the people. This is essentially about accepting our responsibility to uphold the law, most especially, those laws that pertain to Human Rights”. This was the encompassing message of PDDG MARCELO P GARBO JR, The Deputy Chief PNP for Administration to the 50 police investigators and custodial officers of the Manila Police District (MPD) during the kick off activity of the series of Two-day Human Rights Refresher Course for PNP Investigators and Custodial Officers held from September 3 to 4, 2015 at the GMA Hall, MPD Academy Building, Ermita Manila.
